Crappie in North Alabama are starting to turn on! I have had reports of crappie in Guntersville being caught in water anywhere from 15-30 feet deep. If you are in a boat, look for deep shad schools and fish below them with jigs or minnows. Jig colors that work will vary, but Alex reports that "bubblegum" or pink tube jigs are working for him in G'ville.
I still haven't been out in my boat, but I did manage to catch a few crappie under the causeway bridge on Hwy31 in Decatur. The crappie were in about 16 feet of water and hitting from 7-10 feet deep. Also, the sauger seem to be moving up now with this colder weather, so if you like sauger, I don't think it is too early! The crappie I caught weren't "slabs", but about a dozen measured better than 9 1/2" and I gave to a good friend who happened to show up while I was there. I caught the crappie on 1/16th oz. jigs with bright orange heads and several different grub body colors including chartreuse, blue/white, and several Bass Assassin varieties. I caught fish on everything I tried until they quit pulling water at Wheeler dam. The current change killed the hit almost completely.
In any case, if you like crappie OR sauger, get out there soon as I think this might be a good year for both. Even from the bank!

We fish a lot on Smith Lake. Have been catching some good ones around boathouses and trees. Last time we fished, caught about 45 and kept 20 (almost slabs)! Used pink and white jigs. Minnows just didn't get it. Will give more info later.

How does one get to the rt 31 Bridge?

I am talking about the smaller bridge on the causeway heading into Decatur. From Huntsville, head towards Decatur on I565 until it turns into Hwy31, just before you hit the causeway. The bridge is the small one before you get to the turn off for Riverwalk Marina.
