Excuse me if I ask a question nonspecific to crappie. Yesterday while flyfishing, I caught a fairly large bass in Gainsville Lake in north Sumter County. Several places on its fins looked as if they were being desolved or eaten away by some type of chemical. I don't know if that is what was happening, but that is the best way I can describe it. There were also some red spots on it's belly which looked like open sores. Is anyone familiar with what this could be? Fungus, disease, chemicals, old age (20-inches)? I fish for food but certainly did not keep this one. I have never fished in Gainsville Lake before. Is this a condition that is common to the lake or the Tenn-Tom? Thanks for any comments.

Fish gainsville and most lakes up about Pickensville damn very regularly. Have seen this white fungus you mentioned on the gills and fins alot at all places on the river. Dont keep them either but i dont know what it is. Do only Crappie fishing so i dont know about the bass but i have seen it on the crappie. Maybe some of these fish should be taken to dept of wildlife for testing. I know it' s not a pretty site.

I FISHED AROUND EUTAW ON TENN-TOM AND CAUGHT ABOUT 5 CRAPPIE WITH SIMILAR SORES--THEY WERE EXTREMELY SLIMY AND WE DID NOT KEEP THEM EITHER, ALTHOUGH THEY WERE LARGE FISH. DUNNO WHAT IT IS. THIS WAS IN A SLOUGH DOWN FROM FRENCH CREEK.
