To begin with, I've fished for crappie in lakes, bayous, and creeks! Then an old fellow told me one day that the slabs head back to the river after the spawn in search of bigger bait fish, to replenish what they've lost during spawn. So one day I saw a tree top in the main river and I began jigging in it and about 5 seconds later I caught the biggest crappie I've ever seen, 14" and 2.5 lbs. Ever since then I fish the summer and winter in the rivers, and let me tell you, the fish are fat! Better quality fish!

I often fish for crappie on the tallapoosa river in the summer, spring, winter, and fall. To me, rivers produce bigger crappie than lakes and creeks. When the river is raging, I will find an inlet or such which produces an eddy. I use an 1/32 oz. head with a chartruse squid skirt and jig it between the flow and the eddy. When the river is not flowing, I will use minnows, setting them about 8 to12 feet deep. I have caught more crappie on the lake but most of my big ones (3 pounds+) have come off the river. Good luck!

I've always wondered about that myself, but what about the current? How do you gain control of boat and bait? What river were you fishing in? I mainly fish the TN river in N. AL.

The current? Well, I use 1/16 jigs. I've even used 1/8. And If I find a tree top in the river 9 out of 10 times the crappie will be holding in it, so I just anchor off, or use my trolling motor to circle the top! I fish the Tombigbee and the Tensaw in southern Alabama!
