I finally went fishing yesterday, the first time in about 2 months. I spent 3 hours jigging for crappie and only caught 1 very small fish. I then decided to try something different. I put the jig pole away and got out my spinning reel. I put on a small beetle spin with a grup and started trolling in deep water. Interestingly I caught 16 very nice bluegills and 14 crappie. The crappie were pretty small with the exception of one. The larger bream have obviously moved to deep water and are getting ready for next year. I have a question for anyone who can provide some advice.

While trolling, I got a lot of light hits on the beetlespin by fish that didn't seem to be hooked. I theorize that they were hits on the spinner rather than the jig that is attached to the bait, and the fish were hanging on until they figured out they couldn't eat metal and dropped off. Does anyone think that is true and if so, are there any baits that anyone can advise me of that contain a spinner and jig combination like the beetlespin that might be better.

Also, I tried just trolling with a jig/shad combination with no luck. Any advice on baits in general that you have found productive for crappie would be appreciated.

I must admit that this knot in my stomach regarding the attacks on New York and Washington didn't go away yesterday while fishing, but fishing was a nice change.

Try a Blakemore Roadrunner. They work great for vertical jigging also.

Sounds like a pretty good day. I went last weekend and Bass fished. First time out in a while myself. I did ok I guess nothing to brag about. I,ve fished on the Black Warrior river many times but have never seen what I saw last Sat. While fishing I observed the water boiling with what I did not know. Kinda like feeding fish in a catfish pond. Two men were crappie fishing close by and said it was stripe. I tied on a white jig/spinner and trolled across the slough and threw in the spot they were in.They had stopped feeding by the time I got to them but I nailed one the first cast. After that they just disappeared. I thought that was pretty wild as I,ve fished that part of the river for 10 years and never have seen anything like it.Anyway so much for my fish story.Better go for now got to get ready for the President to speak.James Span said it was going to get down in the 40-45 degree mark next week any ideas what this will do for the fishing?Take care for now..Ricky
