Start by reading the manual from cover to cover. You won't learn everything but you'll gain a better understanding of your unit. I know it sounds boring but do-it!

Then the best way I know of to learn to read structure on a finder is to first make sure the sensitivity is set to read properly. The best way to do this is to stop your boat over the concrete boat ramp after you launch in 7-8 ft of water then adjust your finder so it reads a nice solid bottom line. Too sensitive and you'll get static or an echo, to little and the bottom will be lite grey usually. Then go slowly troll over something you know like a cedar tree or a stump field and see what it looks like. Also when you are catching fish besure to look at what type of struture you are catching them on. Look at the land around the area you are fishing and picture it with water on it, this will give you a mental idea of what you're seeing on the finder.

Many people leave their finder on automatic which is okay but you're not getting the most out of it. I've also seen people leave their finder on Demo and can't figure out why they aren't catching fish.

Once you gain confidence in your finder you'll be able to drop a marker bouy right on top of a spot and know exactly what you're fishing over.

Good Luck

The first thing you need is a good depth finder, or at least one that you trust. I have had nothing but dismal results from absolutely every Hummingbird I have ever come in contact with. I now am using a cheap Eagle Fish-ID 128 and have some confidence in it.

It doesn't always show structure as well as I would like, but it is pretty good at showing fish relating to structure and suspended fish.

Bottom line is, if you can't trust your electronics, they aren't worth spit...

Good luck and good fishin'
