I have Weiss for the past 8 years and usually go the middle of
Feb and late Sep/Oct timeframe. Our best results, for size and
quantity, has been Feb. The most enjoyable fishing is when they
are under the docks and are taken by "shootin' the docks", a
method by which you use a light spinning outfit in a "bow &
arrow" fashion to shoot your small,(locally reproduced) jigs
beneath the docks, letting them freefall to varying depths until
you locate the crappie. With a little practice you will master
the technique and with the right conditions, fill the boat! In
Feb, slow trolling the edges of channels with multiple rigs is
the technique that can and usually is, deadly. The locally avail-
able jigs in 1/32 oz have always been my favorite, in various
colors, although a must have is blue/blue/blue and bubble gum!
Steve and Harry of the Lake Weiss Guide Service can give you
daily tips and advice and are very helpful. They also sell the
jigs, that are the best in the area. I am 2 hours from Ky Lake
and plan my trips in the spring to Weiss (6 hours). That shows
you what I think of Lake Weiss crappie. I am an average fisher-
man, having fished all of my life, and have limited out in 3 or
4 trips, daily. Obviously, weather is a huge factor. Plan around
storms and heavy rains, as murky water KILLS the crappie fishing.
If you hit the right conditions, it cannot be beat anywhere! Good
Luck!...../Mike)
