All: I recently moved to Birmingham and have a 9-year old son who wants to be a fisherman. His interest has gotten me fired up, too. I grew up on coast of North Carolina and have only fished in the ocean and inlets of N.C. Haven't fished anywhere in years. Any advice regarding getting started, rod/reel combos, good places for crappie in Alabama would be appreciated.
Thanks

Logan Martin and Neely Henry Lakes are hard to beat. This time of year you should be able to catch them off the bank, around boatdocks, or any type structure. The tackle does not have to be expensive: light spinning rod a nd reel and a few jigs. For me, a minnow bucket with minnows in it is a must!!!

Birmingham area Crappie Fishing can be found and easy to get to at Oak Mountain State Parks 2 lakes that are close to the back gate. I use light inexspensive spinning combos from Wal-Mart (around $20) and live minnows or a natural color Jig, the water is very clear at Oak Mountain. Crappie are going to be biting soon. Also Bibb County Lake is an Awesome place to catch crappie.. either of these lakes rents boats and Bibb County lake also rents trolling motors and batteries and a reasonalble rate.. Also consider Lake Purdy too.
Have a great time fishing.
