Settle a bet for me. My grandparent's family is from Coosa and Tallapoosa Counties. They pronounced the word "Crappie". However, general consensus is that the word is "Croppie", which doesn't make sense because of the spelling? Can anyone tell me the correct pronunciation??

The New Lexicon Websters Dictionary pronounces it "crappie" (like "a" in cat). Which is what caused me to come to the people who use the word the most to answer the question! I figured, with the dictionary proving me right, I would win but now I find that even dictionaries disagree on this one! LOL!

Well yes and no.....I have always 40+ years pronounced it Croppy although many fishermen I have met north of the Mason Dixon line insist it is Cra-ppie. (with the "a" sounding like the "a" in apple). The pronuciation/enuciation is in the mouth of the beholder --- I have heard them called specks, sacalait(Louisiana), and speckled perch....My $0.02 worth

Here in Mobile we call them "white perch" and if you called them crappie no one would know what you were talking about.

Here in Pa., they're called by both, Crappie and Croppie. Depends on what side of the tracks you're from. regardless, they taste the same no matter what you call em....
