Not yet. How about the Tombigbee around Demopolis?

I have not fished Demopolis in several years, I generally fish the Gainesville area and the Choctaw National Wildlife Refuge area on Coffeeville Lake. The crappie spawn may come a little late this year due to the cold weather persisting. Generally, Gainesville starts to get good in early March with the peak being the last week of March and the first week of April, it pretty much works out the same way for Coffeeville in my experience. If you start doing pretty good up in the Demopolis and Gainesville areas, let me know. I'll keep you informed about Coffeeville being that I live very close to it.

Thanks,
Tenn-Tom

Have you ever used a Grey Falcon Crappie Rig? It is a telescoping rod with a small line holder built in? I bought a couple from the Corner Bait in Tuscaloosa several years ago. They have gone out of business and I have been unable to find a supplier for that specific combination. It is great for drop fishing around dense, deep cover as well as dropping under limbs and over hangs.

I have never tried the type rod that you are talking about, I always use B&M products, from the B&M Graphite Jig Pole with a Westpoint Crappie Reel, to the spinning rods that they make. I have found nothing better for the type fishing that I do. I troll, bank fish, treetop fish, and cast for crappie. B&M makes poles and rods for all applications. You should give them a try, also try TeeZur Jigs, they are the best as far as I am concerned. www.BnMpoles.com For TeeZur Jigs, contact David and Jackie Summers at teezur@hotmail.com I'll be on the lookout for the Falcon rods that you mentioned, they sound interesting too.

I went by the Worm Shack in Tuscaloosa today and found a rod exactly like the Grey Falcon mentioned earlier. It is manufactured by Zebco. And even though it comes without a reel, they are obtainable from any Walmart or K-Mart stores.

Have you had any luck in previous years in the China Bluff area. The last time I went to China Bluff was about 10 years ago and we had a lot of fun and a good catch.

Any advise????

I have done very well the past couple of years in Pananchie Creek and also in the Sipsey River area, have not had a whole lot of luck at Turkey Paw Branch or Wilkes Creek, for that matter have not had much luck anywhere below S.W. Taylor landing. Deer Horn has also produced some nice crappie over the past couple of years. Do you know of any good places above Sipsey River?

I have a friend who has caught a lot of crappie in the last couple of years in Commerical nets (illegal). He has released all of them and told me he would show me on a map where he caught them. I have not heard from him as of yet. But, I will be glad to share with you the info. when he gets back with me. I have always shared with others locations of fish. Because I know that no one person can catch them all and that they can't be there every day. With my limited knowledge of crappie, I know that whenever crappie are caught, they will run back from tree or bush and return after all the action is over. I'll be glad to share any knowledge with you because I can't and I know that I won't catch them all.
Have a great day.

Hey Cowboy,

I'd be much abliged if I could get some good information like that. I'll keep posting all the information that I can get for you. I hear that the fishing is beginning to pick up some in the Sipsey River area north of the Heflin Dam, have heard of a few nice catches lately even though the water has been high and muddy. It's probably not muddy in the lakes off of Sipsey R. Best I can tell they are hitting jigs moved real slow in 10 - 14ft. of water, have also heard of a few being caught by casting jigs and road runners. I plan on making the trip to Gainesville maybe this weekend or the first of next week to see for myself.

Hello Tenn Tom

Talked to the friend who fishes Gainesville today. He told me that he had a real good catch on Saturday. The water was up and running, but he fished near the bottom (about 1 foot up) using shiners. He launched at Vienna and fished north. According to him, he was about four miles north of the landing.

How well does the Heflin Dam control the water? Do know of a website where we can find out the normal pool elevation of the river and the current levels?

Good fishin'

See if you can get some specifics on where he fishes, I have made a run up river about a mile above Vienna before just looking but never fished anywhere much over a mile or two above Sipsey River. The upper pool at Gainesville when normal is about 109ft. Here are some good sites to find the river data that you are looking for: www.srh.noaa.gov/serfc and http://water.sam.usace.army.mil /
They do a good job at Heflin with water control, unless it is a major monsoon north of there, the level stays pretty much close to normal.

Talk to you later,
T-T

Would like to continue with info, but not on the entire internet.
We need to figure out a way to e-mail without everyone on the web reading our back and forth messages. If we are not careful, we will have more boats in our fishing hole than we want.
Talk to ya later

Just got back from a trip down on the Warrior.
Had a good day. Caught a lot of fish in the weeds.
Of all the fish I caught none had to be measured. They were all 10 inches or larger. I had to use the dip net on most of them.
I was fishing about 2 feet deep using minnows.. I caught several on a small spinner with a black jig and white tail.
I only had a couple of fish with eggs. I don't think they are ready to spawn. What's your opinion?

I don't think they are quite ready yet myself. I fished Gainesville on 3/12 and 3/13. Did not do well during the morning of 3/12, they did not start biting until after 3 pm that day and I got run out of the water by bad weather on 3/13 early. Most of the fish I caught was done by fishing deep trolling or casting. I did however catch a couple that were 14 inches and were full of eggs, but the eggs were far from being mature. Most of the fish I caught were males in the 11-12 inch range. They did not bite jigs at all on these two days, even when casting I had to tip my jigs with a minnow. Check out the other message for you regarding how to reach me.

I have a map with some locations on it. Don't know how well anyone can do in these places, but like I said earlier, the commercial fisherman told me that he had a lot of crappie in his nets. I have not figured out your e-mail address as of yet. As soon as I get it, I will share it with you.

I go from 7 March to 13 March. Somehow, I missed the 8th.
However, I did real well on the Warrior today. They were all full of eggs and very blood shot. Looks like they might be getting ready. I had a lot of bass fishermen around me today. Local tournament. Lets try again.

I fished Coffeeville Lake on the Tombigbee on 3/18 and 3/19. Limited out on the 18th with some real nice crappie, caught only 20 on the 19th. The eggs in these fish were not mature yet. Caught mostly black crappie on these two days. Going to Gainesville on 3/30/03 and fishing until 4/5/03. I'll let you know how it turns out!
