if you wanna catch crappie on fly try using a brightly colored woolly bugger. trust me this is sure to work. woolly buggers will imitate the forage food of many different fish species. from trout to bass to redfish and yes even crappie. just make sure your fishing where crappie actually live. ive caught all mine in clear still back waters. well hope that helps.

recently discovered that a chartruese colored crazy charlie tears up crappie. so much that ive renamed it the crappie killer. it catches all sizes of em. i actually got it for bream. but its actually a bonefish fly thats known to work well on redfish and sheepshead, but if you want some kick ass action catching some slabs then its the way to go. also try foam terrestrials resembling caterpillers. explosive top water action on a windy day.

I have been fly fishing for crappie for several years--I use a 5wgt and tye my own flies some of which are real killers. On one size 8 jig fly I use under a strike indicator I have caught "tons"of crappie,LM,spots, channel cats, salt water stripes, white bass and hybrids. My largest LM on this fly was 6 3/4 and the same day I limited on crappie and also caught a 10 lb.grinnel!,on West Point. The biggest crappie I have caught consistently come from L. Martin---in Sandy Creek.

Flyfishing is my favorite type of fishing. I have had good luck catching bass and bream. I have experimented a little with flyfishing for crappie. A salesperson at a local sporting goods store sold me some wet flies that were "sure to catch fish". They came apart after about the 4th cast. I saw some guys on an APT program catching crappie with squirrel tail streamers they were casting over a brush pile in a private lake and catching lots of fish. I bought some streamers but didn't have any luck. You know how the hooks hang down on streamers and other file and will hang on anything it barely touches. I tried making my own invention by putting some tube baits on hooks such as those used for jigs in order to make the hoop float with the point up. You guessed it, no luck. I think casting a jig would be a better bet and forgetting the flyrod in that situation.
I would welcome suggestions also. Of course, it may be that I just don't know how to catch crappie in the first place. Good luck.

I Recently have Joined the fine art of fly fishing for crappie. I use differnt flys depending on water clarity and time of day. I have used with great success early spring a Grey-white caddis fly tipped with a piece of greentube from a tube bait for color and texture. I have had more fun fishing for crappie with fly fishing then i do casting for bass. I love watching them hit top water. Good luck
