WCBA Fishing Trip 9-10-99

The gang, six of us to be exact, went out on a Waukegan Charter Boat Association charter on the tenth day of September, 1999.

Wind from the West at 10-20 MPH, yes it was windy! We had a 2-3 foot chop with 4-5 foot swells. The temperature was about 70 degrees. Sunny, windy and beautiful. The Chicago skyline was plainly visible.

We had a great time. The Captain warned us that we couldn't go out far because of the wind. We were lucky the wind was coming from the West, otherwise we couldn't have gone out at all. Even where we fished, 4-5 miles out, the waves were hard to handle. The problem with not being able to go out that far was that that's where the fish were, in the colder deeper waters almost 15 miles offshore. The Captain told us the fishing was going to be slow, but slow for him seemed awfully good for us. Heck we caught 10 fish. 2 of them were monsters (10 LB plus), a couple medium sized fish and a couple more, what they call puppies (1-1.5 pounders).

We fished about 3-4 miles out in about 90 feet of water. The Captain put out flies and spoons on downriggers and dipsey divers.

All in all, the fishing was great (the pair of monster fish really got the adrenaline flowing); the boat's accommodations, couch, head, and fridge were also excellent. The large size of the boat size just took those waves like nothing. If you have never taken a charter trip out on Lake Michigan, you're really missing out on something very special. This group of ex-coworkers and friends plan to take at least one trip a year out on this great lake. What a fantastic natural resource, right here in our back yard, and not many people seem to know about it. We were out on a Friday afternoon and I think we seen only two or three other boats! The fish also taste superb, come get some!
